Being Ready, Always

I have been thinking about a scene in the bible that most of us should be familiar. This scene is Jesus with the multitudes in Matt 9:36-37  (Luke 10:1-2):

36 Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.

This made me more sensitive to the people around me, particularly those who have yet to turn their lives to God. Over the last couple of weeks, I had an unusual dose of encounters and stories with my own ‘multitude’. The description by Jesus in this passage seems so close to home, “distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd”.

One was a member of the Facebook community from a posting on Facebook during London 2012.

“I give all the glory to God. It’s kind of a win-win situation. The glory goes to Him and the blessings fall down on me.” declared one gold medalist athletic, caption beside picture of her with medal in her hands.

Then after that posting, another popped up with an image of hungry naked children with outstretched hands begging for food, with caption “Can your God send us some food?”

Facebook comment: “So your God helps you win gold medal but allows this?”

A subsequent comment: “Yeah, why does He get all the credit and none of the blame?”

Hmm? What can I say? What can I, a Christian say to someone who quite obviously has some gripe about unequal distribution of wealth or more so, why God act the way He acts, at least accordingly to this Facebook netizen .

I am sure you have your share of such online discussion or even with people in your office, campus or amongst friends and family. Do you get angry, defensive, saddened or tongue tied? Or you got too used to such online ‘debates’?

If i looked closer at Matt 9, I know one important response I must have is to exercise compassion and to depend on God by ‘beseeching’ Him. It is tough work of winning lost soul because as Jesus says the harvest is plentiful and workers few. The fact that we have to beseech (plead or beg) means it is serious situation, not for the faint hearted.

I am also reminded of a verse God gave me when He prepared me for my days as university student. 1 Peter 3:15.

15but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.”

No wonder the best solution for the problem of sinful men like you and me is not explanation why things happen the way they do on this earth and why people behave the way they behaved. Why even good people do bad things? I am so glad God sent His only Son. God knows best that the way to bring these people to Himself is the way of love, He so love the world that He gave.

Please pray for a non-believer near you today. Pray for yourself. Pray we with the Son of God will live as one belonging to Him that we may draw men to Him, the One who gives life, life eternal. This world is so ‘lost, like sheep without shepherd and dispirited’. Pray people will not point a finger at God for every wrong but open their arms to Him so that they (we too) will do no wrong because He is Holy as much as He is love.

but because by it I see everything else.”   —  C.S. Lewis

-- C.S. Lewis
